Letter from the chairman
The Bessies has always been a celebration of Canadian advertising in film, but also a celebration of every part of that film. And this is important. It is important because a great idea is nothing without both craft and storytelling. In fact, it’s extremely rare to find brilliant advertising that isn't composed of an excellent idea, framed in exceptional storytelling and crafted meticulously. And, just as one component of an ad can never make it a winner, one individual can never do it without a dedicated, disciplined team. Which is why, this year, for the very first time, we're recognizing these critically important Craft categories with Gold Bessies. And, in that way, we're not just recognizing the great ads, we're recognizing all the disciplines that make them great.
We had two rather awesome panels of judges. One panel judged the Creative Ideas, and another Panel judged the Craft. I'd like to thank them for their time, their expertise, and their commitment to bringing forth only the best Canadian advertising has to offer. And it was no easy task. Entries were up 74%, so the competition was certainly a little more fierce this year.
In addition to the best films in advertising, we will also recognize some of the most talented individuals in our industry with the prestigious Bob Mann Award for Excellence in Post-Production, the Janet Woods Award for Best Producer, The Don Award for a Future Leader in the Film Industry, and the Spiess Award for Lifetime Achievement in Television Advertising.
There is some beautiful work this year. I’m hoping our winners and their creators will inspire you.
